James E. Bartlett - Founding Partner of OpenArt (former Executive Director of MoCADA, New York)

Curator and entrepreneur Dexter Wimberly founded Hayama Artist Residency in July 2020. The four-week long international residency will take place June 15 - July 15, 2021, and includes a roundtrip flight, shared housing accommodations, and a stipend for food and local transportation. Any visual artist over 21 years old, working in any medium - based anywhere in the world, regardless of race, gender, culture, or religion - is eligible to apply. The residency will be awarded to two visual artists, providing them an opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culture and offering a gallery exhibition in Japan at KOKI ARTS, a contemporary art gallery located in Bakurocho, an art district in Tokyo.

“It’s very exciting for Hayama Artist Residency to collaborate with The Newark Museum of Art during our inaugural year. As a frequent visitor to the Museum, I have great admiration for the breadth of their world class art collection and public programming. This partnership is an opportunity to broaden the reach of the residency and strengthen our mission to introduce artists from around the world to Japanese art and culture,” states Wimberly, Founder and Director of the residency.

“We are equally thrilled to work with Dexter on this exceptional initiative,” notes Harrison. “It’s central to our mission to support artists that will expand the stories of the Asian Diaspora locally and globally, and we look forward to advancing this exciting opportunity.”

Hayama is a coastal town in Kanagawa Prefecture, on central Honshū, Japan, with a population of less than 33,000 people. For context, it is about a 1.5 hour drive from Hayama to Tokyo. Since 1894, the Japanese Imperial Family has maintained a residence in Hayama, the seaside Hayama Imperial Villa. The town is also the location of the Hayama hall of the Museum of Modern Art, the first public modern art museum in Japan.
